Why PDH and PDL hold so much liquidity
Day traders build their whole session around yesterday's range. Stops sit just beyond the previous day high (PDH) and previous day low (PDL); breakout orders sit right at them; and targets cluster around them too. That concentration of orders is a magnet.
On XAUUSD the effect is strong because gold attracts a huge intraday crowd. When a new session opens inside the prior range, one of the first things price often does is reach for PDH or PDL to collect the orders parked there.
Turning a PDL (or PDH) sweep into a setup
The level alone is not a trade. The sequence is what matters:
- Mark PDH and PDL clearly at the session open.
- Wait for price to sweep one of them - a wick beyond that closes back inside.
- Look for a shift in structure (CHOCH/BOS) back into the range.
- Enter on the retest of the order block or gap left behind, targeting the opposite level or the range midpoint.
Practical notes for gold
PDH/PDL work best in the first few hours of the London and New York sessions, when volume is high enough to actually run the level. In quiet Asian hours a touch of PDL often means nothing. Also respect the daily boundary you use - many gold traders anchor the day to the New York 5pm close rather than midnight, which changes where PDH/PDL actually sit.

BTL Magic already tracks these daily levels as ranked zones and only produces a verdict when a sweep is confirmed by structure. It is the automated version of the routine above.

What are PDH and PDL in gold trading?
PDH is the previous day high and PDL is the previous day low. They are heavily watched levels where stop-loss, breakout and target orders cluster, which makes them common liquidity targets on XAUUSD.
How do you trade the previous day low?
Wait for price to sweep the PDL (wick below that closes back above), then look for a structure shift (CHOCH/BOS) back into the range and enter on the retest, targeting the range midpoint or the PDH.
Where does the trading day start for PDH/PDL?
It depends on your convention. Many gold traders use the New York 5pm close (22:00 UTC) as the daily boundary rather than midnight, which changes exactly where PDH and PDL sit.
Do PDH and PDL always get swept?
No. They are probabilities, not guarantees. They are most likely to be run during high-volume London and New York hours, and less reliable in quiet conditions.
